I was sitting at home last Friday night (April 18), with absolutely no intention of going anywhere. Then, while bumming around online, I found out about a show happening at the Smiling Buddha bar – Girls Just Wanna Have Punk – a fundraiser/showcase of 10 badass punk groups helmed or co-helmed by girls. No way I wanted to miss out on that. I got my gear together and arrived at the venue at about 8:30. I was too late to catch the first three acts, but there were still plenty of kickass punk bands to photograph!
Camera: Canon 60D
Lens: 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
Flash: Vivitar 283
-One of the rare occasions I’ve used flash at a show. One reason being that it’s fairly obtrusive (except at chaotic punk rock shows, haha). Also, to be honest, I don’t really know how to use it properly. Still, I’ve had some decent results with it. It was a bit dim inside the venue, but I probably could have managed without it.
-I bought my flash more than 20 years ago. I think it’s time for an upgrade!
-Talked with a friendly photographer named Ken Lee. He was shooting pics and video for the event organizer. You can check out some of his work on his Foto Redux page.
-I didn’t include the exposure settings under each picture like I usually do. That’s because the images were a bit dark and I had to brighten some of them up quite a bit in Photoshop. So, kinda pointless. But, just for the record, I mostly went with ISO 400, f9, 1/15.
-Smiling Buddha is a bit cramped. I sometimes found myself right next to the speakers, getting blasted in the ears. Not pleasant. Need better ear plugs!
-There was some heavy-duty moshing going on. I found myself pinned up against the wall by a relentless wave of humanity on a few occasions.
